Decorah Bank & Trust Company recently went live with the largest rooftop solar installation to date in Decorah. The 22 kilowatt (kW) photovoltaic solar array sits on the bank roof fixed and should produce enough energy to power the equivalent of three average-sized homes.

Dennis Pottratz of Go Solar in Decorah managed and installed the system with the help of local contractors. “It has been rewarding to learn ways to reduce our energy usage and then produce some of our own energy through solar power,” comments Joe Grimstad, chief operations officer of Decorah Bank. Solar has come a long way in both technology and cost. Grimstad comments, “It’s a long payback – but we plan on sticking around for a while so it makes sense for our business.”

Decorah Bank & Trust Company’s solar panel system recently went live and is the largest rooftop solar installation to date in Decorah. With a 22 kilowatt (kW) photovoltaic (PV) solar array on the roof and the panels fixed at a 15% angle to the south, it should produce enough energy to power the equivalent of three average-sized homes during peak sunny times.

In 2008, Decorah Bank installed a 2 kW PV solar array on the drive-thru facility in downtown Decorah – this produces enough to offset 20 – 100 watt light bulbs. Now with both solar systems combined, the bank is predicted to gain 23-24kW total energy production at peak times. The use of renewable energy is one more step the bank is making toward reducing its impact on the environment.
